Parents’ Update August 18-22, 2008

What a great Pista sa Raya we had last Saturday! I would like to thank the parents who helped make the event possible: Tina Perez, Ria dela Cruz, Rachel Isip, ZsaZsa Isaac and Celani Trajano for helping organize the palaro; Jen Coroza for hosting the palaro; Cecile Tabbilos for securing such a great venue; and of course, our “documentation team:” Chino and Liz Wasan, Trina Gorayeb and Rica Quirolgico. Of course, the advisers and SPED team really made such a great effort in teaching the children Filipino folk songs and dances. Teacher Lilymae and Teacher Meg made the event extra special with their skills in music and dance, respectively. Maraming, maraming salamat rin po sa lahat ng dumating.

The day after the pista, the teachers and I trooped to Tortugas Elementary School in Balanga, Bataan. The school, which is found along the coastline, was actually experiencing a little flooding problem because of the high tide. Despite this, their teachers came to learn more about the Four-Pronged Approach to Reading as well as Making Manipulatives and Art Activities for Children. The students, were just as enthusiastic as they listened to stories and did the art activities that the Raya teachers prepared for them. We do hope that similar opportunities to reach out to communities and public schools in need will arise in the future.

Nursery Tutubi, Pawikan and Pipit

It’s been a very long weekend for all of us. I hope that doing the tracing homework with your kids afforded you enjoyable quality time : )

Going back to work, this (quite short) week is all about things that we do at home. Our funny story The Napping House will be our springboard on our lessons on sense of touch and hearing as well as identifying parts of the house. To better understand the story, we will be doing a post-reading comprehension check activity. We will continue working on our self help skill of independently putting on our socks and shoes. We will also identify and sound out the letter N as well as name the number 6.

On Friday, we will be cooking up something good during our Occupations time—we’ll be making fruit shake!

Congratulations to all of us, especially to our Pawikans, Tutubis and Pipits! Great job during the Pista! Thank you for taking part in this very memorable event. We hope that all of you had fun being with the rest of the Rayans as much as we did ? Looking forward to November’s School Play!

Kinder Adlaw and Bulan

It was a successful Pista sa Raya celebration, all the kids’ hard work during practices paid off, thanks to all your support! It was really heartwarming to hear Kinder Adlaw’s Leron Leron Sinta and Bulan’s Pamulinawen sung with delight and see them dance Maglalatik all together.

After the Pista, on Monday and Tuesday, we’ll be celebrating the days of 2 important people who played a big role in our country – Ninoy Aquino and Manuel L Quezon. These are National Holidays and we won’t be seeing each other. It’s indeed a long break for all of us but I do hope the Kinder kids will do their homework. : )

And for the rest of the week, we’ll be talking about the members of our community in Raya. Our springboard story will be Sing a Song of People and discuss what community members do for each other. We’ll find out what makes secondary colors; paint shapes; read CVC words; learn the different tourist spots in Luzon; and play Langit Lupa in PE.
Have a wonderful week!

Prep Bathala and Kabunyian

The Pista sa Raya was a rousing success! Maraming salamat sa lahat ng mga magulang at pamilya na tumulong at nakibahagi sa ating pagdiriwang! Congratulations to all the Rayans who really worked hard for their wonderful performances! :)

Coming from the long break, we will have an introduction to our community. We will talk about the community workers, the places where they are found in the community and the tools they use. We have the literary piece, Walter the Baker to help us discuss the importance and value of community workers in the community. Also, a community worker will visit us on Friday (a turon and bananacue vendor) to interact with the kids and teach them how to make the yummy fried bananas. We will continue on our lessons about the Number After in Math and Rhyming words in English.

Muli, maraming salamat! :)

Grade 1 Matapat

The Grade 1 – Matapat showed how much they valued your presence last Saturday as they showed off their dance moves in Pandanggo sa Ilaw and their marvelous singing in Kalesa.

For this short week we will continue and end our lessons on giving value to animals. We will read our second to the last springboard piece, My Nine Lives by Clio. In Integrated Language Arts, we will talk about verbs and pandiwa. We will also practice our consonant blends squ-, scr- shr, and spr. In Science, we will discover how animals breathe. In Math, the clock will be ticking as we determine time by the hour. Lastly, to conclude our week we will go on a field trip on Friday as we discover how to take care of animals.

Grade 2 Marangal

Congratulations for a successful Pista sa Raya! I hope the 2-day school break has energized you enough because this week we will start preparing for our First Trimestral Assessment. We will review our past lessons through games and worksheets in class. Please be guided by our pointers for review so we can help them at home.

This week we will also continue our lessons using the springboard pieces The Terrible Five and Si Hugo, Ang Pahamak na Hunyango. Math will be about multiplication as repeated addition, Science will be about animal defense mechanism and the parts of a plant, and grammar lessons will be on adverbs. In Sewing, we will continue making backstitches, and in Art, making our mural.
