Parents’ Update July 14-18, 2008

The Kinder and Prep students were so lucky to have such special guests yesterday. For Kinder, it was Tita Rachel (Ilysse’s mom) and Tita Ningning (AJ’s mom). For Prep, it was Tita Kitty (Gavin’s mom) and Tita Ingrid (Tiger’s mom).  The children really appreciated your visit—thank you Raya moms! : )

This coming Tuesday is actually the real National Children’s Book Day, but we shall be celebrating it in Raya the day after, on July 16. This year is the silver anniversary of the said event so I hope you’ll have your children see the exhibit of 25 Best Loved Children’s Book Characters which will be in the CCP for the next two weeks, and at the Manila International Book Fair in September.

Wednesday will not only be special for the kids’ celebration of literature and reading; it will undoubtedly be more special because their secondhand books shall be going to a library being started in Barangay Putingbuhangin, San Juan, Batangas. It’s a nice thought that the same books that enlivened the Rayans’ imagination, will now be read and loved by other children.

Happy National Children’s Book Day!

This week is a really festive week as we celebrate one of the nicest of childhood experiences—being read to and reading literature for the first time!

Our lessons on character profiling and sequencing shall make us experience Rainbow Fish and Bilog na Itlog, our springboard literary pieces, on a higher level. Our lessons on appreciating art pieces and finding shapes in the environment will not only make our sense of sight keener but also help us be particular with details. We will be having T. Meg as she continues to teach us the fun dance Itik-Itik, as well as T. Lilymae who will be teaching us more of Filipino music. On Friday we’ll be preparing gulaman at sago to practice our cutting-with-knife skills. Our letter for the week is the letter T and our featured number symbol is 1.

Please don’t forget that Wednesday is our NCBD celebration, when we will see everyone in school dress up as their favorite Filipino storybook character :)

Thanks!

Kinder Adlaw and Bulan

This week, we’ll be talking about our families and the different family set ups in our country. With the help of our story Papa’s House and Mama’s House, we’ll understand how having separate homes, different families and single parents are okay. There might be a little confusion for some kids when we talk about this topic, I do hope you can help guide your kids in understanding this sensitive subject at home by processing it also with them. We’ll also have sequencing numbers 1-10; paper folding; keeping ourselves healthy by exercising; identifying, sounding, and writing the letter Ll; and matching the mommy and baby letters of the alphabet.

This is an exciting week for the Raya kids, it’s our National Children’s Book Day on Wednesday and we’ll all be dressing up as our favorite local children’s book characters. I can’t wait to see the kinder kids in their costumes! They’ll be meeting author Augie Rivera (in the morning) and illustrator Conrad Raquel (in the afternoon). I do hope they won’t forget to bring their favorite books that they’ll be sharing in class as well as the old books they can donate.

By the way, I’d like to thank Tita Rachelle and Tita Ningning for passing by Kinder Adlaw and Bulan last Friday and sharing about their families in class!

Prep Bathala and Kabunyian

We had an interesting day listening to Tita Kitty and Tita Yael’s families last Friday. We were also glad to know the names of our classmates’ family members when we shared about our family pictures. And, we are surely very excited to make our own soap in science with Teacher CP.

For the coming week, we are still talking about our families and how they are unique from others. Haluhalo Espesyal and Tight Times will serve as our springboard pieces as we discuss the special things we do together as a family. We will also talk about the features that we got from our parents and other older family members as we discuss heredity in Science. We will continue our lessons on MSAIOB in Filipino and syllable counting in English. We will also talk about Gender of Nouns in both languages.

Please bring the special food that you eat together as a family on our food sharing day on Tuesday (good for 2-3 persons only) and the letters addressed to your child on Friday (handwritten, concise and sealed please, :)).

We are also celebrating the National Children’s Book Day on July 16 so please have your child come in their favorite LOCAL book character costume. Also, please have them bring their favorite book and those books to be donated to charity.

Lastly, you may start looking for the Prep’s costume (for girls: Balintawak dress and for boys: white camisa chino and black pants with yellow handkerchief) for our Pista celebration in August and also practice this song at home:

Orde-e

Mantacco, mantacco

Gangganasan

Ay ila ella ellalay,

ay insi-insinalidumaay

Orde-e.

Maraming Salamat! :)

Grade 1 Matapat

Hello Matapat parents!

Bruhaha! Bruhihi!, Yuck, Chicken Pox, and Apolinario Mabini will be our springboard pieces this week as we talk about vaccines and overcoming weaknesses or fears. In Math, we will continue practicing addition with carrying and start with addition of two-digit numbers. In Science, vaccines will be our focus for this week. In integrated language arts, we will review our knowledge of pangngalan, discuss the consonant blends sh- and ch-, and collective nouns. In Art, we will use syringes as we learn about colors, abstract art, and some Filipino masters. Lastly, we will pay a visit to Ms. Carmen Jimenez’ (Hans’ Mom) clinic to end our week.

Grade 2 Marangal

For this week, the Grade 2-Marangal students will learn more about the things that make the Philippines and the Filipinos beautiful and special. We will have a “fieldtrip” in C & I to some of the country’s scenic spots and natural resources and discuss how we can protect them. In Science, we will have a better understanding of our uniqueness through our lessons on congenital disorders and the skeletal system. We will continue learning singkil in PE and talk about its importance and meaning to the Filipinos in Mindanao.

Math will be about adding three-digit numbers with regrouping while Language Arts will be about verbs.

Our springboard pieces for this week are Aray! Nasugatan Ako by Luis Gatmaitan and You Are Special by Max Lucado.
