Parents’ Update June 30-July 4, 2008

As we move into July, we have new part time faculty member in our midst. Her name is Teacher Meg and her background is in ballet and jazz. She has been teaching young kids to dance for quite some time now, and we are fortunate to have her teach in Raya this July and August. Teacher Meg will be enriching our Rayan’s knowledge of Filipino culture by teaching them Filipino folk dances. These lessons will prepare them for the upcoming pista in August.

Last week also saw one of our Nursery parents, Teacher Maybelle, begin her teaching in Raya. The kids truly enjoyed the beginning of their musical journey with Teacher Maybelle.

We hope that Teacher Maybelle and Teacher Meg will develop in our little Rayans, an appreciation of the arts. Welcome to our two new teachers!

Nursery Tutubi, Pawikan and Pipit

Counting rationally up to 10, learning different shapes and discovering the many parts of our body (including the ones that we don’t see) as well as taking care of them are just some of the many lessons that the Nursery Class are going to learn this week. More exercises and drills are to be done to take our pre-reading and pre-writing skills a level up. The stories I Don’t Like to Eat! and I Love Mud and Mud Loves Me! will surely bring the class into a better understanding of our lessons.

We look forward the next music class with Teacher Maybelle that the kids really love, as well as an exciting gross motor activity that will not only test our agility and speed. A film showing about our bodies and a cooking demonstration shall cap our busy week.

The first month proved to be fun and truly memorable. Caps off to all of you who have evidently been working so hard on making learning such an experience for our kids. Looking forward to July!

We’ll still be talking about the different parts of our body this week but we’ll be focusing on what part of the body we use to taste different kinds of food: our TONGUE! We’ll be using our tongues to determine which food are sweet, sour, salty and bitter. We’ll learn about the food we like to eat and determine which of them are good and bad for us with the help of our springboard books Princess Penelope and Totong Alboroto. We’ll sound out, identify, and write the letter Ss, continue simple patterns (AB, ABB, ABC), talk about showing respect by saying po and opo, build our Filipino vocabulary in different kinds of food and utensils we use in eating, and play kick ball in PE.

And to cap our week, we’ll be cooking one of our favorite Pinoy dishes, sinigang! We’ll be cooking them ourselves and I hope you’ll be able to taste our special creation on Friday.

A fun week for all of us!

Prep Bathala and Kabunyian

For the coming week, we will move on to the rights of a child. We will use the literary pieces Si Aling Oktopoda and Baghead to introduce the right to have a caring home and to express one’s self freely. We will also do a collage made from our things when we were babies and do an oral report about the meaning of our names. In Science, we will talk about the 3 food groups and the food pyramid. In Math, we will still review about numbers 1-20 and skip counting by 10. Lastly, we will continue our lessons on Nouns in both languages, Microsoft Paint and the letters MSAI in Filipino.

Please start looking for some of their baby things over the weekend. We will do the collage on Tuesday. We will need those that can be cut, drawn on and pasted on paper.

Thank You!

Grade 1 Matapat

Last week stole our hearts away. This week, we will discover how to keep, not only our hearts, but our whole body healthy when we talk about food and nutrition. Our springboard pieces for this week are: Si Joey at ang Gulay Gang and Tipaklong, The Gardener. In Science, we will talk about the different food groups and will come up with our very own diet plan. In Integrated Language Arts, we will talk about kailanan ng pangngalan, consonant blends (gr- and tr-), and review our knowledge on nouns. In Math, we will learn the concept of place value. Mga tungkulin ng batang Filipino will be our topic for C&I. Lastly, we will be making paper mache in crafts and a butterfly out of fruits and vegetables in art.

Grade 2 Marangal

We start the week with a fieldtrip to a restaurant to supplement our science lesson on classifying food. In Language Arts, we will learn to form the comparative and superlative degrees of adjectives by adding more and most in English and mas, higit and pinaka- in Filipino. We will learn Roman numerals and comparing number values in Math. In Citizenship and Identity, we have the topic “tindahan” as introduction to learning about one’s own community. In Art, we will continue designing our kites and we will cap the week with a kite flying activity! : )
