It was great to see both continuing and new Rayans in school last week. As we all know, the first week of school is bittersweet, because some kids really experience separation anxiety during the first days of school. For some children, it is quite a challenge to get into the routine of school: following the schedule, lining up, sitting still and getting along with other children. But rest assured that the Raya faculty will make sure that every child eases into the school routine and has many opportunities to enjoy learning and making new friends. Thank you to all of you for coming to school, easing your children’s fears, and being open to the school’s rules and systems. Here’s to an exciting school year :)
TEACHER ANI
Nursery Tutubi, Pawikan and Pipit
Congratulations to all of us for a successful first week of school! Thank you to all of you who went out of your way (or took a leave from work) and helped us convince your kids that school is worth a try :)
I Can Fly! and Look What I Can Do! are our spring board stories for this week. We shall focus on discovering more things about ourselves and characteristics of Filipinos as we start the theme: I Am Me. Identifying body parts, telling things about one’s self and the national song and flag will also be discussed in class. Rote counting up to 10 shall be introduced and will be integrated in pre-numeracy and pre-literacy activities. This week, too, the class shall engage in gross motor activities, do art projects related to the theme and understand literature deeper through forms of interaction.
Our kids are still in the process of assimilating the motions of the class and understanding the whole concept of schooling and learning. Let us help them by processing the overload of experiences in school at home as well as encourage and affirm them as they take this very huge step.

Why am I different from other kids? This is the question we’ll try to answer this week with the help of our springboard book, I am Different. We’ll get to know our unique qualities as well as our differences with our classmates. We’ll look in to our feelings, likes and dislikes, our parts of the body and their importance. We’ll review our knowledge on the letters of the alphabet, the different colors and the different shapes around us. By mid-week, we’ll talk about our national hero, Dr. Jose Rizal whose day we’ll be celebrating this week. We’ll find out how we can be little heroes in our own way and listen to our grade 2 ates and kuyas as they talk about Araw ng Kalayaan, the Philippine flag and other national symbols. To cap off our week, on Friday we’ll be making flag sandwiches we’ll be sharing with each other! It is also our first PE day that day; please don’t forget to have your kids wear their PE uniform because we’ll be surely playing outside.
It was fun getting to know your little ones last week and I can’t wait to spend more time with them! Hope they will love going to Raya everyday! :)

Bathala and Kabunyian
The Prep Bathala and Kabunyian classes sure had a great time partying during the first week! :)
The literary piece Jennie’s Hat will help introduce discussions about body parts and feelings for next week. We will also be talking about naming words in English and the things that begin with the letters Mm and Ss in Filipino. For Math, we will be comparing the length and size of our body parts. Finally, on Friday, the Prep kids will be engaged in finger play involving the different kinds of feelings, play a fun game using their body parts, and do a semantic web about Jose Rizal.

Grade 1 Matapat
It was a first week full of games and laughter for the Grade 1-Matapat as they learned about the history of the Philippine Flag, arranged and counted flags with numbers 1-110, looked for previously learned sight words with a flashlight, painted a big Philippine flag, and made a Philippine flag windsock for Philippine Independence Day. They also expressed their artistic selves by making their very own flag in paint, and writing all about it after.
This coming week, it will be all about Jose Rizal and their eyes. The springboard pieces this week are: Jose Rizal and Oh No! My Eye is Red. In Math, they will be reviewing their basic addition skills. They will also learn the concepts consonant blends (cl-, bl-, and fl-);, tools that aid our senses in Science; kasarian ng pangngalan;, and katangian o anyo ng mga Filipino in C&I.
Let us all celebrate the birthday of our national hero with the Grade 1 Matapat this week!

Grade 2 Marangal
With the help of our springboard pieces, Si Dindo Pundido and The Yellow Paperclip with Bright Purple Spots, we shall be doing various lessons on adjectives (in both English and Filipino), answering our GOLD and TS worksheets about simple level-appropriate selections, and practice our skills on observing and graphing observation results in Science. In Math, we shall be doing exercises on writing and counting up to 500 as well as review ordinal numbers. In theme writing, we shall be writing about our summer vacation as well as reasons why we deem ourselves special : ) On Friday, not only will we have a Rizal quiz show, but we'll also showcase our many talents! Here's to a fun-filled week in grade 2.
